The engine can actually be implemented di erently, It is a combination of database, metadatabase, scheduler. It can be relational or object-oriented. Ideally, it can be an intelligent agent.
The platform involves at least two levels in the memory hierarchy disk+RAM, a single CPU embedded in an SMP node, a slow interconnect to the application ODBC, TCP IP. Re nement of the software is obtained by setting runtime and compilation parameters. The net e ect of this approach is a severe reduction in software production and maintenance cost. The down side is an overly complex software architecture, which is often not optimized for the platform concerned. , make me believe that there is a need for a variety of DBMS engines that each respect the limitations of their platform.
